Judge Extends Sabally’s Detention Till January

A high court judge in Banjul on Friday, 23rd December 2022 has granted the application to extend Momodou Sabally’s detention till after Christmas and New Year.

The State filed a summons on notice seeking the high court to grant their application to extend the detention of UDP’s campaign manager, Momodou Sabally until after the vacation. Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Abdul Maita Yusuf appeared for the State.

Justice Ngui Mboob granted the application. This means Sabally will be detained till on the 5th January 2022 when he is expected to appear. Foroyaa is reliably informed that he has not yet been charged.

Mr Momodou Sabally was arrested on Wednesday, 21st December, 2022 and was at some stage held at the Police Intervention Unit headquarters at Kanifing. The reason for his detention, according to the police was in connection to an alleged viral circulation suggesting the president will be unseated before the local government elections.

Meanwhile, the Acting Master of the High Court issued a memo dated 9th November, 2022 stating that next term will begin on 9th January, 2023. The Chief Justice has assigned Justice Zainaba Ngui Mboob of the Bakau High Court as the Christmas vacation judge.
