QUESTION OF THE DAY

IS WESTERN EDUCATION A THREAT TO AFRICA’S SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND IS BOKA HARAM’S CALL FOR THE REJECTION OF SUCH EDUCTION RIGHT?

Young minds are very impressionable. Hence many young people have been misled to believe that there is a phenomenon call western education which is alien to African culture. However, if one asks what western education entails, one is bound to hear many fairy tales. This is because of the fact that there is nothing like western education.

Knowledge of natural and social science has no national boundary. Human beings everywhere have contributed to the quantitative and qualitative development of knowledge and people are learning from each other to develop sophisticated technology needed everywhere to cure illnesses, facilitate communication, build better health and educational facilities, construct many bridges and ensure a balanced and proportionate development of the people.

Education creates a thinker and not a robot. We need to train the African youth to be world citizens capable of learning from and teaching others the knowledge and values we have acquired.
