A nuclear catastrophe was avoided in Iran after a dangerous attempt to attack its nuclear facilities. Somehow reason prevailed and the war was put to an end within twelve days.
The war in Ukraine has been prolonged since 2022. Mayhem in Gaza gained full swing in 2023 after Hamas’ adventure in killing and maiming Israeli citizens led to the collective punishment of the Palestinian people by the Israeli government. Some people are beginning to refer to the devastation of Gaza as the world’s most heinous catastrophe in the twenty first century. Hamas is not destroyed but men, women and children are suffering the brunt of Israeli rage.
The war in Ukraine is building tension between NATO and Russia. Instead of hitting Moscow to take the war to Russia, it is leading to the tension between Russia and NATO and the consequence could lead to nuclear catastrophe.
The world is therefore in need of a leadership which can reduce the tensions that are heating up, in order to promote international peace and security. The UN security council, whose role is precisely to promote international peace, and security has been disregarded and the UN system is under threat while catastrophe continues to raise its ugly head in all parts of the world.
It is time to rethink and reinvent international cooperation based on the mutual respect of the sovereignty of countries and peoples.
