QUESTION OF THE DAY

Is the initial rumour that Darboe and co will be convicted before the Eid and pardoned to show State generosity on Eid day tenable?

The answer is in the negative. The trial judge has asked Darboe and co to open up their defence on the 7 of July 2016 and their bail application is set for ruling on 14 July. Both dates are beyond the date set for eid prayers.

The politically motivated case does not deserve to be treated as a criminal offence requiring pardon. The most honourable action for a State is to recognize the sovereign equality of political parties and political leaders. This recognition should lead to treating politically charged actions as conflict requiring dialogue, resolution and reconciliation. This is what is expected and not trial, conviction and pardon.
