IS IT NOT INCREDIBLE THAT THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY IS QUIET ABOUT THE DETENTION WITHOUT TRIAL OF ONE OF ITS MEMBERS REPRESENTATING KOMBO CENTRAL?

72

It is very strange that a law maker could be held in detention without trial for over two weeks in gross violation of section 19 of the Constitution.

The president and the law makers are required to take oath to defend the Constitution and the other laws. The executive is therefore duty bound to ensure that its agents carry out their functions without fear or favour, affection or ill will.

The National Assembly has full power to protect the welfare of its members. The majority and minority leaders should engage with the speaker to find out what they should do to protect national assembly members from arbitrary arrest and detention. Those who represent the people should be given immunity from arbitrary arrests and detention. This is the only way to protect or to preserve their independence in discharging national duty without fear or favour, affection or ill will.

Foroyaa will continue to engage the National Assembly Authority to see whether it will discharge its function to protect the integrity of the National Assembly and its members.
