IS IT IN LINE WITH THE PRACTICE OF MODERN STATE TO CLOSE MEDIA HOUSES BECAUSE OF NON PAYMENT OF TAXES?

QUESTION OF THE DAY

Foroyaa does not envisage any media house being closed in The Gambia for being unable to pay tax. In many countries media houses are seen as non-state service providers. Media houses do present information on a daily basis to help government in particular and the public at large to form informed opinions.

To close a media house is to close the eye of a government and prevent it from knowing what is happening in certain quarters. This is why many countries are giving tax exemption to media houses and even allocating annual subvention to media houses to ensure their sustainability.

We hope that through channels of communication with the GPU the concerns of media houses will be addressed.
