Is Government Bearing The Provision Of The Constitution In Mind In Removing Public Officers From Office?

90

QUESTION OF THE DAY

Several reports from people in government departments and public enterprises being dismissed are coming to this paper. It is important to remind the government that termination of staff of government departments and public enterprises must be based on law regardless of the type of government staff, of government departments and public enterprises have rights.

Section 169 of the Constitution warns that

“(1) No public servant shall be –

(a)    victimised or discriminated against either directly or indirectly for having discharged his or

her duties faithfully and according to law;

(b)    be removed from office or reduced in rank or otherwise punished without just cause.”

We therefore hope that those who manage the affairs of the country will pay heed to such constitutional dictates.
