QUESTION OF THE DAY
IS GAMBIA/SENEGAL RELATION GETTING BETTER OR WORSE?
The continuous border closure emanating from a dispute between the Gambia Government and the Senegalese transport union whose members ply the SeneGambia route via the Bamba Tenda/ Yelli Tenda crossing has now grown into a full blown crisis requiring sub regional mediation.
Foroyaa started to follow the crisis from day one when the Senegalese Unions complained of payment of a fee of 400,000 fCFA before they will proceed to also pay for ferry crossing. The Gambia Ports Authority claims that they have not increased the ferry tariff. Despite attempts to get confirmation of the 400,000 fCFA increase in fees as alleged by the Senegalese transport unions, no Gambian official was willing to deny or confirm the claim. Notwithstanding, the Senegalese transports stopped using the Bamba Tenda/ Yelli Tenda ferry crossing. Gambian transports were also halted thus impacting on revenue collection at Bamba Tend/ Yelli Tenda and the importation and exportation of goods between the two countries.
Foroyaa is following the internal impact and external interventions in the crisis and will report on them.
