QUESTION OF THE DAY
Readers would recall that Section 192 of the 1997 Constitution
States that ‘‘Local government administration in The Gambia shall be based on a system of democratically elected councils with a high degree of local autonomy.’’
This is why the Local Government Act first provided for the Direct Election of Mayors and Chairpersons of Councils. Amendment to the Act provided for Chairpersons of Councils to be elected by the Councillors.
There is indication that amendments are being prepared that would enable the Country to have direct election of Chairperson. The law makers should be mindful of the provision that bars electoral laws from being changed within a specific period. Foroyaa will talk to some law makers and find out whether they are alert to such provisions and what should be done about them.
