IS CEMENT BECOMING AN EXPENSIVE AND SCARCE COMMODITY?

The dry season is supposed to be the peak of the construction industry. As we move into June, another rainy season will be unfolding. Those in the construction industry have been complaining about what they deem to be the rising cost of cement and its availability.

At a press conference held by the importers of cement from Senegal, it was revealed that a ban on the mode of importation is one of the causes of the rise in the price of cement and its scarcity. They are of the view that cross border trade in cement provided a fertile ground for those in the construction industry to have access to cement at lower cost. Now that they are required to rely on shipment of the cement by sea rather than transportation by road, they are by no means in a position to ensure speedy and regular supply of cement.

Foroyaa will find out from the major construction companies how the rise in the price of cement is having on their companies. The paper is also focusing on the major importers per bag and those involved in rebagging the commodity. The institution responsible for competition of the various stakeholders will also be contacted.
