The Gambia National Paralympic Committee (GNPC) last Thursday received Paralympic training equipment donated by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) through the Government of the People’s Republic of China. The presentation which was aimed at creating opportunities through sports development for a better Gambia was held at the Independence Stadium.

Sainey Camara, the Secretary General of the Gambia’s Paralympic Committee, said GNPC is also known to be the only differently able organisation that promotes disability sports way back around 2005.

“We have all gone a long way and today we are still happy that we are striving not alone but we have supporters locally and our international collaborators, who are also our benefactors in trying to promote sports for persons with disability,” said Mr Camara.

Camara added that developing Paralympic sports is unique to them and it’s also an important element of the sporting agenda for The Gambia. He also encouraged supporting persons with disability throughout while commending the donors for their support.

The President of GNPC who spoke via online, Sulayman Colley, said the event was important and timely. He assured that the equipment will be put into good use.

“This development will boost the capacity, strength of our athletes,” he stressed. He urged them to use the equipment for the intended purpose. He thanked their partners for their immense support and contribution to the GNPC.

Zhou Ningyu, the Political Counsellor and Deputy Head of Mission, commended the IPC as well as the Chinese Disable Persons Institutions and the Chinese equipment makers for their tremendous efforts for making the equipment available.

Modou Gamo, Gambian Para Power Lifer and Coach, spoke on behalf of his colleagues and thanked the donors for their support.

Marcel Mendy, the Executive Director National Sports Council who spoke on behalf of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, described the day as important for the fact that they are having these equipment for the first time.

“We are more encouraged because there will be more commitment to improve our standing as a team as well as a country,” Mendy added.

While applauding the sponsors for their support, Mr. Mendy shared his optimism that the support will go a long way.
