Mr. Junkung Bayo, a native of Pacharr village in the Central River Region (CRR), informed Foroyaa on Monday, August 8, 2016 that the water from the heavy downpour, which inundated a lot of hectares of rice fields, has now receded but resulting in a heavy destruction of rice crops in its wake.
He said the heavy rain, which occurred almost two weeks ago, has destroyed both the already harvested rice and the matured ones that were yet to be harvested.
“It is now that the affected farmers are able to visit their rice fields after the rain water has receded to assess the damage done. Thank God, some of the rice plants have not germinated in the water. However, many of the plots that were already harvested have been destroyed. You have to understand that most of these farmers are poor people and that rice production is very expensive both in terms of financial resources and human labour. Some of these rice farmers have already spent between D5000 and D7000 and have now ended up with absolutely nothing,” said Bayo.
He said the affected farmers are therefore calling on the government and donor agencies and organisations to come to their aid as this is a difficult period that they are experiencing with no food available in their households to feed themselves and their families.
It could be recalled that this medium has earlier reported, a fortnight ago, the heavy downpour of rain which resulted in the destruction of rice fields in Pacharr, Faraba, Taifa, Tabanani and other surrounding communities in CRR.
