Gambia’s new Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Chairman, Joseph Colley, has issued a firm warning to groups posing as political parties, vowing that the Commission will no longer tolerate organizations operating outside the law.

Mr. Colley made this remark in his first major policy statement, marking a tougher stance on unregistered political activity. His warning targets individuals and groups he said are “misleading the public” by claiming to form political parties without following due process.

“Political affiliation is a constitutional right, but it must be exercised responsibly and within the limits of the law,” Colley said. “There are certain people claiming to have formed political parties without registering with the IEC. That is unacceptable.”

Colley emphasized that the registration of a political party is governed by specific legal requirements, which must be fulfilled before engaging in any political activity. “Let us not put the cart before the horse,” he urged. “Those seeking to register political parties should comply with the law before organizing political events.”

The new IEC chair also called on all political actors to promote peace and tolerance as the country approaches the 2026 presidential election. He said the Commission remains committed to fairness, transparency, and accountability.

“The IEC will execute its mandate without fear or favour,” Colley stated. “We are a law-abiding institution guided by the rule of law and fair play at all times. Our doors remain open for clarification to curb misinformation targeting the Commission and its stakeholders.”

Colley’s statement comes as the IEC finalizes its 2025–2029 Strategic Plan, which focuses on inclusion, transparency, and stakeholder engagement to rebuild public trust.

He announced that the next presidential election will take place on December 5, 2026, followed by National Assembly elections on April 10, 2027, Councilor elections on May 22, 2027, and Mayoral and Chairperson elections on June 26, 2027. Supplementary voter registration will be held from April 1 to May 14, 2026 to update the 2021 voters’ register.

Colley said the election dates were carefully scheduled to ensure proper logistics, transparency, and integrity in the process.

“The Commission will continue to work with all partners, political parties, CSOs, media, security services, and voters, to deliver free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections for all Gambians,” he assured.
