HOW MANY COUNTRIES IN AFRICA ARE HOLDING ELECTIONS IN 2016 AND WHAT ARE GAMBIA’S CHALLENGES?
15 Countries in Africa are supposed to hold elections in 2016.
In West Africa, Benin, Cabo Verde, Gambia, Ghana
and Sao Tome and Principe are supposed to hold elections. In Central Africa, it is Tchad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, Gabon and Niger.
In East Africa, it is Comoros, Somalia, Uganda and Zambia that are also supposed to hold elections this year.
Gambia’s challenges are already highlighted by the opposition in the Gambia in the form of proposals and demands for electoral reform. The unilateral response of the government or its amenability to mediation will, to a large extent, dictate the post electoral political climate.
Every student of politics is now putting together the pieces of events leading to the elections of 2016. History is being made. Posterity will be the judge.
