How Is The GRTS To Function Under The New Gambia?

218

QUESTION OF THE DAY

Political parties in the country have different opinions on the performance of GRTS. Some are beginning to accuse GRTS of favouritism.

Our readers should be informed that the Constitution has provided a Code of Conduct for the observance of GRTS employees that the Director General should print out and ensure its reading by his staff. Section 222 of the Constitution is instructive.

GRTS is part of the Press

Section 207 Subsection (3) obliges that  ‘‘The press and other information media shall  at all times, be free to uphold the principles, provisions and objectives of this Constitution, and the responsibility and accountability of the Government to the people of The Gambia.’’

Hence there should be no discrimination on the basis of party affiliation in terms of coverage by GRTS. Furthermore Section 208 adds that: “All state owned newspapers, journals, radio and television, shall afford fair opportunities and facilities for the presentation of divergent views and dissenting opinion.”

Foroyaa will continue to monitor the performance of GRTS to gauge whether it is fulfilling its constitutional mandate.
