Under democracy freedom of speech is regulated by the exercise of freedom of speech. Words are allowed to combat words and leave the people to be the judge.
If one alleges that words are incorrect, that person reserves the right to give the facts in such convincing manner that right thinking persons in society would be convinced of one’s position. When that is done, one does not even need to accuse the person of being a liar. It is society in general that holds the person in low esteem and thus humbles the person.
Should one feel certain words had resulted in the loss of an opportunity in financial terms one could estimate the loss and pursue the case in court to demand cost for the damages in court.
This is the way freedom of speech is regulated to prevent harm to individuals without threatening any right to freedom of expression by taking the law into one’s own hand.
