Abdoulie G. Dibba Hon Abdoulie Saine, the National Assembly Member (NAM) for Banjul Central complained that he was misquoted by Halifa Sallah and Mr. Ousainou Darboe, on the issue of making President Yahya Jammeh a monarch. The Banjul Central NAM was given the opportunity to explain what he said yesterday, Monday, 1 September, 2014. Hon. Saine, speaking to this reporter at his residence, said what he told his colleagues at the National Assembly during the adjournment debate was that they can crown the president in their own way by making him a constitutional monarch just like the King of Morocco. “I added that it is the Gambian people who can do that and not the National Assembly because it is an entrenched clause which cannot be changed by the Assembly or the Executive but by the people through a referendum,” said Hon. Saine. The Banjul Central NAM further said that when he mentioned this at the Assembly, many people have confronted him asking why he should call for the president to be crowned a constitutional monarch. “I always explained myself to them arguing that with the way things are going in terms of the development under the president’s leadership, he deserves to be crowned as a constitutional monarch. This is my opinion,” said Hon. Saine. He added “This is what I said and if anybody wants to debate on this, I will defend my position because the opposition has a lot to gain by making the president a constitutional monarch and they should be at the forefront in the campaign.” Editor’s Note Mr. Daboe and Halifa Sallah have the right to reply. ]]>
