The management of Hilltop Radio station situated at Sukuta Lambai junction, which was recently ordered closed by operatives from the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), has addressed a letter to the Public Utilities and Regulatory Authority (PURA) requesting for clarification regarding the closure.
According to Mr. Basiru Darboe, Chief Executive Officer (CEO)of the radio, he and Mr. Muhammad Jaiteh, his Administrator, went to the regulatory body, PURA, on the 3rd January, 2016, to find out the reasons why their radio has been closed.
Mr. Darboe said they met with some officials of PURA who received the letter and commended them for coming there for them to resolve the matter. He said they were told that PURA has not been informed about the closure of their radio station but would work on it.
“PURA personnel noted they were not aware of the closure because the NIA have not informed them that they will be closing the radio stations,” said Mr. Darboe.
The Hilltop Radion CEO said since inception they have always been abiding by the rules and have not done anything unlawful.
Mr. Basiru advised that “Gambians should really take charge of their destiny…. they should understand and be aware of their surroundings and we should learn how to interact with each other and reflect our minds because a person with understanding is said to be a nation builder.”
It was earlier reported in the media that three men identifying themselves as personnel of the NIA came to the radio and ordered them to stop transmission between the hours of 4pm and 5pm on Sunday, 1 January 2017.
