Heated argument between municipal police and the community of Bakoteh / Manjai, over the reopening of the dumpsite, located within the KM passed off peacefully yesterday, Thursday 29 June.

A team of municipal police officers, who were said to have been sent to open the dumpsite, met some residents of the communities living within the area, who refused them entry. There was total disagreement between the two sides, but the police professionally calmed the situation and left matters as they found it.

The members of the communities within the area came out in their numbers to deny the police to reopen the dumpsite.

The dumpsite has been closed now for almost four months and this has led the public to dump waste indiscriminately within the municipality.

Mr. Abubacarr Jeng who represents both communities when contacted said the police who came to open the site, were from the Kanifing Municipality and not sent by the Police Commissioner.

Mr Jeng said what the police Commissioner told them was he did not give any directive to anyone to open the site.

Mr Jeng added that they were told to go to Banjul with Kanifing Municipal Council authorities to discuss the issue of the site; that both sides have been called to Banjul to sit and talk over the mater.

By the time of going to press, the Bakoteh / Manjai dumpsite remained closed for dumping.
