QUESTION OF THE DAY
HAS THE PRESIDENT FINALLY ACKNOWLEDGED THAT HIS DECLARATION OF AN ISLAMIC STATE IS UNLAWFUL AND UNCONSTITUTIONAL?
So it appears. In his address to the National Assembly he mentioned that he will table a Bill before the end of the session of the National Assembly on the matter. This Bill is being awaited for by Foroyaa and one wonders how a referendum will fit into the presidential election schedule. Complication and more complication is the order of the day.
Anyway, The Gambia belongs to the people and the voters will become the law makers in a referendum. A Bill was introduced to try to extend the death penalty to crimes not associated with killing someone, which would have required a referendum. Now it is collecting dust. Any Bill requiring a referendum before 1 December could well suffer the same fate. Time will tell and the people will decide their fate.
