Gambia Wrestling Association (GWA) has labelled a wrestler’s appeal
against a four-year ban, ‘an apology letter’ instead.
Mboran, a wrestler banned for indiscipline, letter for the GWA to
consider revoking his suspension has been described one of apology not an appeal.Babacarr Sey manager of the beleaguered wrestler Tuesday revealed to
Foroyaa Sport of his camp’s written piece to the sport governing
institution seeking an overturn of the four-year suspension from all
wrestling activities imposed on Mboran.
But GWA Secretary General Habib Nyassi rebuts Sey’s comment.
‘He wrote an apology letter. He calls it an appeal but the content of
the letter makes it an apology letter. He accepted his wrong doing and
wants to be forgiven by the wrestling association. We were about to
consider it but he committed another offence. In our letter of
suspension, he was told not to get any closer to wrestling activities.
But he was seen in the last combat (between Gambien and
Hoyuntan)’HabibNyassi told Foroyaa Sport yesterday.
The furore , it could be recalled, began after the arbiter halted
Leket Bu Barra and Mborantwo minutes into allocated time after he
found out the carpet on which the fight was been staged wasn’t
properly covered with sand.
At that moment, the two wrestlers had grappled but furious at the
impromptu break by the referee, Mboran disapprovingly gesticulated
before marching out refusing to continue the fight.
Leket was later declared winner on the spot on verdict of the referee
on account his adversary failed to return to the arena.
The Gambia Wrestling Association after wrapping up its investigating
heaped a four-year ban on Mboran, reportedly the lengthiest ban since
resurrection of the traditional sport.
The judgment though copied to arena stakeholders has been described in
some quarters as grossly harsh.]]>
