The Gambia Transport Service Company (GTSC) has officially launched the “TAAMO” Card, a cutting-edge smart travel card designed to revolutionise public transportation. This innovative card allows passengers to tap in and out of GTSC vehicles seamlessly, with fares deducted automatically based on usage.
Speaking at the launch event, GTSC General Manager Seedy Kanyi highlighted the significance of the TAAMO card in their digitalization efforts.
“This development marks a significant milestone in our mission to enhance service delivery for our passengers and support the government’s digital transformation agenda,” said Kanyi.
He explained that the TAAMO card is a key component of a broader initiative, which includes the recent commissioning of 70 new buses by President Adama Barrow in April 2023. The initiative also features a fully renovated and re-equipped workshop, the installation of 70 powered bus shelters, two containers of spare parts, a new mobile workshop, and the deployment of a full-time project manager and two resident technicians.
“The TAAMO Card will ensure accountability, eliminate revenue leakage, and boost our revenue generation capacity,” Kanyi noted. “It is user-friendly for our operators and partners, including banks, microfinance institutions, forex bureaus, and cell phone companies. It will expand our customer base and provide cost-effective advertising opportunities,” he said.
Kanyi emphasised the Card’s benefits for passengers, including safety, convenience, and financial flexibility.
“Passengers can enjoy the ease of paying fares without the risk and hassle of handling cash, and families can travel conveniently with preloaded cards. Parents can preload funds for commuting students, eliminating the need to queue for bus tickets,” he said.
In the event of a lost, stolen, or damaged card, Kanyi assured passengers that their funds would be fully refunded on a replacement card.
He also expressed gratitude to TKXPORT, GTSC’s first bus supplier, for their support and sponsorship of the Kanifing Bus Station construction, valued at over one million dalasi.
GTSC Board Chairman Saloum Malang remarked on the company’s importance to the country’s progress.
“GTSC is transforming the transportation sector, despite past state interference that caused its collapse,” Malang stated.
Transport Minister Ebrima Sillah praised the TAAMO Card as a “cutting-edge smart bus ticketing system” that will redefine commuter experiences, making journeys more efficient, convenient, and enjoyable. He affirmed his ministry’s commitment to providing safe, reliable and affordable public transport to meet the growing demand in the country.
