By Sailu Bah The Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA), effective from this March 2015, will take over the collection of rents and rates from the municipal councils. This was confirmed by the Mayor of Banjul, Mr. Abdoulie Bah, in an interview with this paper in his office at the Banjul City Council (BCC), on Friday, 13 March, 2015. Mayor Bah said the BCC revenue collectors will be the ones responsible for collection accompanied by the municipal security and in collaboration with GRA and that after the collection, the monies would then be handed over to the GRA. The Banjul mayor revealed that the Council will now be making requests for funds to the GRA on a monthly or two months basis, if the need arises, for their daily operational costs and staff salaries. Asked whether this change will not affect the operations of his council, the BCC mayor responded in the negative, adding that it is normal. “I am urging my staff as well as people to try and cope with this new situation as well as change their attitudes and work harder towards the achievement of the target goals and objectives of the nation,” appealed Mayor Bah. According to a letter from the ministry for Lands and Regional Government, all Councils have been informed that with effect from 1March 2015 the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) will be responsible for the collection of all revenues on behalf of the councils without exception. The letter further indicated that this is an executive directive.]]>
