GOVERNMENT MUST LEARN HOW TO EXIST FOR THE PEOPLE

67

Within this short period of time, the country has gone through a storm and stress period, through arrests, trials, remanding of accused persons, use of tear gas to disperse crowds, granting of bail, the setting up of an advisory and consultative body to review the decision of PURA and the retiring of the country to a state of cautious calmness in anticipation of concrete actions that will address all the concerns.

What is needed now is for government to put its advisers and policy makers to task so that the office of the Attorney General and an oversight agency like the human rights commission would collaborate and engage Gambians who want to put their concerns to the authorities to know how to lodge those concerns under the law.

Secondly, concerns already raised should be addressed so that clarifications should be made where they are due and remedies provided to redress them and acknowledge missteps or maladministration. The security forces must also go through a process of reviewing all actions taken to give it what is reasonably justifiable in a democratic society. These actions should be taken in tandem so that the demand of each situation is addressed for the country to mature as a democratic country where a government exists for the people.
