Nasiru Janneh, the Controller at the Weights and Measures Bureau under the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment, has confirmed to Foroyaa that they have taken action against Jah Oil Company for selling or producing underweight cement. He stated that the decision was taken in line with section 45 (3) of the Weight and Measures Act of 1977.
Janneh said Jah Oil Company had contravened section 45 (3) of the Weight and Measures Act of 1977. He added that his office has sent the production company a letter instructing them to replace all the bags of cement that are less than 50 kilogrammes.
“Following our inspection of the company’s cement plant, which revealed that the majority of the bags of cement produced during this time weighed less than 50 kg and less than the 1 kg permissible weight, we have written to the company requesting that they replace all of the aforementioned bags, which have not yet been sold.
“The customers would be the ones who will lose because the shop owners would sell the bag at the same price even though it was underweight bag of cement.”
He said the Bureau is making efforts to reach out to all those that bought the cement within the period the technical error was discovered.
He said they are coordinating to replace the bags within a week at the cost of the company.
“As long as they reported a technical problem, despite that, we have given them a fine of fifty thousand Dalasi (D50, 000). This was sort of an internal problem that they should fix, if they had a proper monitoring mechanism in place. It would not have happened,” Janneh said.
Meanwhile, several attempts were made to get the side of Jah Oil, but all efforts proved unsuccessful.
