The Government of the Gambia, through the National Food Processing and Marketing Cooperation (NFPMC), has assured Gambian farmers on the ‘‘availability, affordability and accessibility of fertiliser’’ for the upcoming rainy season. This assurance was made by NFPMC’s Managing Director, Muhammed Njie, during an interview with Foroyaa last Friday, 20 June 2025.

According to Mr. Njie, once the price of fertiliser is finalised and announced by the government, its commercialisation and sale will commence with immediate effect.

“We will start the sale of fertiliser very soon, once the government finalises the price. As we speak, all our whare houses are filled with bags of fertiliser, and hopefully, the sale of fertiliser will be announced by next week. The price of fertiliser will also have an impact on its subsidisation because the government will be paying the difference for the farmer. Currently, all our stores are stocked with bags of fertiliser. The government has also been subsidising the price for farmers at D1, 500 per bag. This amounts to over 600 million Dalasi in the past, just to ensure its affordability to farmers,’’ Mr. Njie said.

To ensure its accessibility, he said they will distribute the product across the length and breadth of the country, through cooperative marketing societies (CPMS) and private agents.

“We will work with private agents that have the capacity to repay, and CPMS’ that have performed well in the last trade season, to ensure that fertilizer is accessible in every part of the country,’’ Mr. Njie reaffirmed, and said NFSMPC and government are committed to support farmers for the upcoming cropping season.
