The Independent Electoral Commission has started on a good footing by publishing its calendar of activities for the forthcoming electoral cycle 2026-2027.
What is required now is to hold a press conference as a mechanism for public hearing on the various aspects of the calendar. The key issue that should be uppermost in the consideration of the Commission is the type of registration of voters. It is important for the commission to take note of the rumours of alleged malpractices in the registration of voters that had given rise to distrust.
The beginning of fair elections starts with a credible register of voters. It may be in the interest of the Commission to start with a clean slate by having a general registration of voters that should be carefully monitored by all stakeholders to have a credible register that would lead the country to the next electoral cycle.
