Mrs. Mary Small, the Acting Executive Director of Gambia Committee on Harmful Traditional Practices (GAMCOTRAP),gamcotrap-ag-executive-director yesterday, 27th of December 2016, advised Outgoing President Yahya Jammeh to accept the verdict of the Gambian people and hand over executive power peacefully on 19 January 2016.

She made this appeal in an interview at her office yesterday, 27 December. She added that the will of the Gambian people must be respected, as the president himself did initially by accepting the results on the day after the election and congratulated the winner President-Elect Adama Barrow.

”If you tell Adama Barrow, the President-Elect, that he will become the president of the Gambia he would not believe you, or if you tell Yahya Jammeh that he will lose the 2016 election he would not believe it. We are saying let him accept in good faith. In every election there is winner and a looser,” counseled Mrs. Small.

She also expressed concern for the vulnerable groups in society namely the women and children, adding that the President must do everything possible to ensure that they live in peace. “He used to say that women and children were his friends, and he has been supporting women and children, so he should put that into consideration, that if things turn apart, it is the women and children who would suffer the most,” said the GAMCOTRAP Ag. Executive Director.

She said they are appealing to the outgoing president and everybody to give peace a chance.
