By Sulayman Bah Gambian stopper FuttyDanso’s dream debut turned nightmare after his defensive error gave Diego Valeri his former team-mate chance to score the winning goal. The Scorpion defender was bombarded with tweets and texts by Portland Timbers fans (his erstwhile club) in appreciation of his contribution and his years there. A huge banner, in it written (Merci Futty 98) was unfurled by fans ahead of what was Danso’s dream debut appearance for new club Montreal Impact against the Portland Timbers. However, little did they know how ironically fitting it would become at the final whistle as the Gambian’s error presented chance for Diego Valeri which the designated player, acquired from Argentina, sufficiently pounced on to punish the stopper for the mistake as he poked into an empty net. It wasn’t the best of outings Futty had anticipated as he cuts a desolate figure in his post-match comments, but promised to review footage of the game to rectify the howler in coming games. “I’ve got to go back and watch the game again, analyze and see what we need to do. The cross came in. I stepped in to block it. I cannot say, off the top of my head, what happened, but definitely, we’ve got to go back and look at it and try to rectify.”Futty said. Assistant gaffer Mauro Biello said of the Gambian’s performance:“We had to rest some players. We had a difficult week and he came in. For him (Danso), he needs to find his rhythm. Tonight was a difficult game. He had the right intentions playing against his old team.” Speaking in appreciation of fans efforts, the ex-GPA man told reporters: “I definitely did get tweets and texts from a lot of the fans, saying they were going to come up to this game because of me and they want to show respect and appreciation for the time I spent in Portland. I really appreciate that. It means a lot. But now, I’m here, I’ve got to move forward and try to do what’s best for this team.” ]]>
