In a significant step towards enhancing regional security and economic cooperation, officials from the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) are currently engaging with their counterparts from the Senegalese Customs Administration in Dakar. This 10th bilateral meeting aims to intensify efforts to curb illicit trade and smuggling along the porous borders shared by the two nations.
The discussions attracted representatives from various ministries and agencies of both the Gambia and Senegal, including officials from the Ministries of Finance and Trade, Port Authority, Transport Union, Chambers of Commerce, the Gambia High Commission in Dakar, and the Senegalo-Gambia Secretariat.
Welcoming the Gambian delegates, Dr. Mbaye Njie, Director General of Senegalese Customs, emphasized the long-standing friendship between the two countries. He reiterated his commitment to upholding bilateral agreements, stating, “Our cooperation is crucial for the prosperity and security of both nations.”
Commissioner General Yankuba Darboe of the GRA underscored the need for intensified efforts to combat illicit trade and smuggling. He highlighted the importance of maintaining vigilance along porous borders through regular patrols and adherence to approved trade routes. “Our collaboration must be robust and proactive,” Darboe stated. “By sharing our experiences and challenges, we can develop actionable recommendations to strengthen our efforts.”
Darboe also emphasized the role of the SIGMAT system in enhancing cross-border trade management.
“The implementation of SIGMAT can significantly bolster our cooperation, facilitating the free movement of goods and people while reinforcing national security,” he added.
The opening session concluded with both customs leaders expressing gratitude to the governments of the Gambia and Senegal, as well as to all participants for their contributions and commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation.
