The Gambia government, through the Programme for Accelerated Community Development (PACD), has procured 25 pregnant “Brown Swiss” cows and two bulls from France to enhance milk production and revitalize the country’s cattle industry.
The initiative aims to strengthen national development efforts by modernising livestock farming.
The imported cattle, sourced via ANIPL-Senegal, are known for their high milk yield and strong breeding potential. According to the Office of the President, the project is entirely funded by the government as part of broader efforts to improve the dairy sector and make high-quality breeding stock accessible to farmers.
“By introducing these animals, the government aims to support and improve the productivity of local breeds. This is a manifestation of the government’s commitment to transform the livestock industry in the country,” a statement from State House reads.
During an inspection visit to the West Africa Livestock Innovation Centre (WALIC), President Adama Barrow expressed optimism that the trial phase of the project would drive meaningful progress in the livestock sector and contribute to economic growth.
“The cattle will be distributed to master farmers who have the knowledge, skills, and resources to effectively rear them and contribute to sustainable agricultural practices across the country,” President Barrow stated.
The Programme for Accelerated Community Development (PACD) is a flagship initiative of the Gambia government that started in April 2020. It is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and coordinated by the Department of Strategic Policy and Delivery (DSPD) under the Ministry of Public Service, Administrative Reforms, Policy Coordination, and Delivery.
