Mr. Abubacarr Jallow, Principal of Gambia College, who headed a delegation, congratulated President-Elect Adama Barrow and
assured the new government of close collaboration with his institution in all its fields of studies.
He said he was delegated by the Staff Welfare Association and also the Student Union government to speak on their behalf.
“Our mission is first of all to come and congratulate president-elect Adama Barrow and wish him well in his new position and hope to work with him in his new government collaboratively because we are into the development facets of this country which is agriculture, health and education,” he said.
He continued “if his government means well for this country then he will have to focus chiefly into those areas because a nation which is sick will not develop, a nation which is illiterate or whose education is meaningless cannot also develop and agriculture has been the back born of this country and these are the things that can move the country forward.”
Talking about the current political impasse, he said he thinks the Constitution is clear with regards to what action should be taken. He noted that the outgoing government was a party in the election which has been held and the voices of the Gambian people have been heard by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), adding that “if they have something that they want to do in court “I hope the court will act judiciously and in the interest of the Gambian people. But L’m sure that doesn’t stop the process which is the transition process and I am not sure whether this petitioning will be done in a day, bearing in mind the magnitude of the allegations that are made.”
Mr. Jallow cited the 2011 presidential election which also witnessed a petitioning. “A petitioning process was on and inauguration took place so this year also I am seeing the same thing and the verdict can come at anytime later. So if the verdict says the election was marred then we go into another election but I am not foreseeing a different verdict from the one that has already been declared by the IEC.”
