The newly appointed Principal of the Gambia College, Mr. Jallow, has
said that quality education lies on the top of his institution’s
priority. Mr. Jallow, who since 2005, respectively rose through the
ranks of lecturer, senior lecturer, deputy registrar, actingregistrar, and registrar, expressed his delight over his appointment to this prestigious position.
As the then registrar, he said he has a smooth and gradual transition
to his new office as he was virtually running the affairs of the
college even though there was a general overseer. He unveiled plans of
motivating his hardworking staff and improving the college’s
infrastructural condition as some parts are dilapidated due to the
intensive use as a result of rise in population. He said he is
currently working with the Work Supervisor in trying to get some of
the toilet systems changed from the flush nature to pit latrines which
will later be emptied into septic tanks. This, he said, will be more
effective and durable.
Speaking on quality education, the principal said the college has now
raised the entry requirement bar so as to enroll better students who
will be well equipped teachers to serve the country. “If you improve
on the quality of intakes, then you are likely to get better students
and if you provide them with resources, they will use the resources
better and eventually come out as qualitative graduates,” he noted.
Asked to shed light on the late payment of stipends,
Principal Jallow said it depends on when and how much money they have
to share. He said the college is not financially strong enough to pay
the stipends and as a result, it waits for subventions in order to
settle the students. He said that money comes from the tax payer’s
money and noted that the college is the only institution where one
gets quality education for free and still gets paid during their
course.
The principal finally thanked the entire college community for the
understanding and cooperation they have shown to his administration in
their quest to make the Gambia College an internationally recommended
center of academic excellence.
Speaking to the Gambia College year 3 students recently during their
passing out ceremony at the school, the Deputy Permanent Secretary for
Programs at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Momodou
S. Jallow, seized the opportunity to congratulate the principal on his
new appointment. He said this development is as a result of the
selfless national service Principal Jallow continues to render to the
Gambia College and hoped that his new post will help him to accelerate
the development of the institution in achieving its desired goals. He
reiterated the principal’s take on quality education, saying the
decision to raise the entry requirement bar is a clear manifestation
of the college’s commitment to quality education.
