As controversy surrounding the sale of former President Yahya Jammeh’s confiscated properties deepens, Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA) has turned its attention to the National Assembly’s selection of a committee to investigate the matter.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, May 15, 2025, GALA Spokesperson Saibo Camara said while the group is aware that the selection committee has made a decision, they will be monitoring the process closely.

“GALA would have preferred an independent NAM who is not part of the ruling party to head the committee. You cannot be both a player and a referee in the same game. Such an arrangement lacks the impartiality and credibility required to get to the heart of this scandal. The Gambian people deserve more than a political charade dressed up as oversight,” he said.

Camara emphasized that although they are unhappy with the leadership of the selected committee, GALA has chosen to allow them to do their work while keeping a vigilant eye on the proceedings.

“We will watch them closely,” he stated.

The National Assembly’s response comes in the wake of President Adama Barrow’s national address on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, and growing calls for accountability following revelations made in the investigative report, “The Assets of Gambia’s Former Dictator Go for a Song.”

GALA has continued to demand full transparency, an independent investigation, and accountability for all individuals involved in the alleged mishandling of Jammeh’s seized assets.

“This is a defining moment for President Barrow and for our democracy,” Camara said.
