FROM GENOCIDE TO DEPOPULATION OF GAZA

The Palestinian people are going through the most difficult period of their history. They have the right to self determination and independence, but that right is subjected to disregard by Israel. Consequently, many forces have emerged that aim to challenge Israeli rejection of a two-state solution.

The United Nations did establish Israel and Palestine against the text of the League of Nations that gave Britain the responsibility of trusteeship of Palestine. Since then, the United Nations has shown its powerlessness in enforcing its resolution. The United States has been arming Israel without making maximum effort in ensuring that the Palestinian state co-exists with an Israeli state.

Unfortunately, Hamas’ adventurism and suicidal attack on Israel has led to the genocidal reaction of Israel and the total devastation of Gaza. Civilians, especially children and women, suffered more from the genocide. The death toll is over 46,000.

The US presidential election was seen as a stumbling block to US mediation to end the war. Now that there is ceasefire in Gaza, one can assume that the people would be allowed to resettle and negotiation would commence for a two-state solution.

It is amazing that the new President of the United States would at this stage talk about Palestinians leaving Gaza to settle in Egypt or Jordan. He has to clarify what he means and US diplomatic circles should not disregard such a statement which may be interpreted as a call for ethnic cleansing. This does not leave the United States with a good image in international politics.

Power does not earn a country respect. It is justice that earns the respect that a country deserves. Nothing can be more unjust than to deprive a human being in the twenty first century a homeland of his or her own. That the Palestinian people would soon take ownership of their homeland and build it to be a land of liberty, dignity and prosperity is a sentence backed by historical facts and is irrevocable. Hence, any statement to the contrary would never stand the test of time.
