The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has arrested 4 soldiers who are currently detained at the Police headquarters in Banjul.
Speaking to ASP Foday Conta, the police spokesman, yesterday acknowledged that four soldiers were arrested by Military Police who later handed them over to police last week Friday, on 24 February around 6pm. He however declined to disclose the names of the detained soldiers or the reasons for their arrests ‘for security reasons’, noting that as far he is concerned there are preliminary investigations going on.
Needless to say, the soldiers have been detained for more than 72 hours contrary to the stipulations of the Constitution which spells out that a detainee shall either be released or brought before a court within 72 hours.
Meanwhile former prison director general David Colley was arrested and detained by the police on 27 February, 2017 in the evening following his removal from office.
