For months we have been calling on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to look into the plight of Gambians in Senegalese prisons.
It is common knowledge that some Embassy staff in the Gambia used to visit their Nationals in Gambian prisons and even take provisions for them.
When embassy staff take interest in their Nationals they are likely to be treated with respect and those who are detained by error without any tangible evidence to convict them would be released.
The recent prison strike covered by the Senegalese media has exposed many shortcomings which the President of Senegal is being called upon to address. This is an opportune moment for the Gambian High Commission in Dakar to visit Gambians in Senegalese prisons to find out their problems and take it up with the Senegalese authorities.
