Former GIA MD Case file not yet with DPP

By Rohey Jadama Hadi Saleh Bakum, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has told the court that the case file of Mr. Bakary Nyassi, the former Director of Gambia International Airlines (GIA), is not yet with the state. He made this disclosure before Justice J.E Ikpala of the Banjul High Court on Tuesday, 13th January, 2015. “My lord the case was transferred from the magistrate court, but we are yet to receive the case file and we are applying for an adjournment to get the case file from the police,” said the DPP. However, there was no objection from the defence counsel, Kebba Sanyang. The trial judge, in his ruling, noted that the case diary is yet to reach the DPP’s office to enable the state to decide on the case, but added that the accused person, who is although not charge before him, is released on bail. Subsequently, the case was adjourned to February, 5th 2015 at 11:30am. Mr. Nyassi first appeared before Magistrate Dawda Jallow of the Banjul Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 21st October, 2014 and was charged with 6 counts. He was granted bail in the sum of D1,000,000 and was to provide two Gambian sureties, each of whom must deposit D500,000 to the Court Registrar and to submit their ID Cards and swear to an affidavit of means. The accused was also ordered to summit all his travelling documents to the Registrar of the Court. According to the charge sheet, counts 1 and 2 are ‘Economic Crimes’, count 3 is ‘Stealing’, count 4 ‘Abuse of Office’, counts 5 and 6 are ‘Neglect of Office Duty’.  ]]>
