China congratulates the Gambian government and people on the smooth and peaceful presidential election held on December 1, 2016. China respects the will of the Gambian people, and looks forward to deepening friendly relations and expanding mutually-beneficial cooperation between the two countries.
On December 2, 2016, President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China sent a message of congratulations to President-elect Adama Barrow of The Gambia. President Xi stated in the congratulatory message that since China and The Gambia resumed diplomatic relations in March this year，the friendly and mutually-beneficial cooperation in various fields has been advancing extensively, which promises a bright future. Facts have shown that the resumption of diplomatic ties between China and The Gambia conforms to the trend of time and is in the fundamental interests of the two countries and peoples. President Xi reaffirmed the great importance he attaches to the development of China-Gambia relationship, and expressed his readiness to make joint efforts with his Gambian counterpart to future deepen the bilateral relations so as to deliver greater benefits to the two countries and peoples.

The European Union stands ready to fully support the President elect, Mr. Adama Barrow, his future government and the Gambian people on the path of democratic reforms, which Mr. Barrow has outlined in his election campaign.
The European Union reconfirms its commitment to remain at the sides of the Gambian people to build sustainable and inclusive development.
