When Foroyaa started publishing evidence from the Coroner’s Inquest, we could see the gap in reporting because of the holding of part of the proceedings in camera. It is therefore evident that if the media is to be relied on to know the whole truth and nothing but the truth it must not publish reports on trials with gaps in the evidence that is before the court. We therefore hope that the court will be sensitive to the challenges of the media community and will enhance media work by not restricting the gathering of information while court proceedings are on.
We must emphasise again that hearings in court are of public concern. Hence the media have the primary role in discharging the function of gathering information and disseminating it to the wider population. No obstacle should therefore be placed on the media in its attempt to discharge its public function of gathering and disseminating the truth in good faith in the public interest.
