DESPERATE GAMBIANS SHOULD NOT BE EXPLOITED

75

Governments enter into international agreements that are ratified by the National Assembly to give the agreement a force of law. There is a Memorandum of Understanding between Spain and The Gambia. The text of the agreement is without ambiguity.

It was strange that a statement could emerge from the government indicating that the following companies would be responsible for the recruitment of workers to perform work in Spain:

Mbye Consulting Recruitment Agency; Outsource Recruitment; Work Max Africa Recruitment LTD; Tokey Recruitment Agency; Help Them – The Gambia Recruitment Agency; Cruiseship the Gambia Recruitment Agency and GAMJOBS Limited.

The same government issued a subsequent press release indicating that the companies mentioned are not to recruit workers for Spain.

The Minister of Information has further cautioned Gambians not to pay any money to such companies. However, the government minister of trade has concurred with Foroyaa’s report that the Department of Labour has the sole responsibility under the MoU to conduct recruitment of workers for Spain. However up till the time of going to press,  the Department has not issued any notice calling on Gambians to send their applications for jobs in Spain. The nation deserves an explanation why this is the case.

Foroyaa will continue to monitor any notice given or recruitment undertaking by the Department of Labour to gauge whether its actions are characterized by transparency, accountability and fair play.
