Confirmed: Gambia Volleyball indoor team kicked out of African Games

By Sulayman Bah Gambia men indoor team has been disqualified from the ongoing African Games in Congo.Gambian team Foroyaa Sport yesterday revealed the team’s disqualification owing to late takeoff as a result of financial constraints. The Sports Council were tasked to airlift the team today but for funding the issue, the team couldn’t fly out. The outfit missed out on three matches in group A. Gambia’s disqualification was relayed to the country’s volleyball federation by African Volleyball Federation boss DrAmrElwani in a communique. Part of the text disclosed, read: ‘according to our CAVB and FIVB sport regulations it is impossible to participate after a team miss the second match, as well by September 9th nearly all the qualifying group matches are finished so your participation in this AAG is over and your team cannot participate and cannot be even accommodated in the Olympic village so please do not let them fly to Congo’ The beach volleyball team, funded by the GNOC president and FIVB’s Dr. Ary S. Graca meanwhile, are on track to partake in the Brazzaville having left Gambia on Monday. The three-man team comprising players Malick Jammeh and Baboucarr Jarra and gaffer Babou Joof, remain buoyed ahead of their participation. ‘ We both know that great volleyball nations will converge in Brazzaville for the games and this is our first appearance in continental stage, we will give our best, we aim to raise the flag of our nation by finishing among the best three nations in Africa,” Malick Jammeh who’s the team captain said. The AAG beach volleyball competitions will start on September 9th. The Gambia men team is ranked second in zone 2 behind Sierra Leone.]]>
