The National Assembly’s Select Committee on Jammeh’s Assets on Monday began a weeklong inspection of properties linked to former President Yahya Jammeh, starting with the State House in Banjul. The visit, which also included stops at the Police Car Park in Kanifing and MSC in Kotu, is part of the committee’s inquiry into the disposal and sale of assets identified by the Janneh Commission as belonging to the former head of state.
“At State House, we took an inventory of about 25 vehicles, but we are going to compare their chassis numbers with the number of vehicles we have in the records submitted to us, then we will be able to know how many vehicles are there,” said Hon. Abdoulie Ceesay, chairperson of the committee.
The inquiry follows a publication by The Republic medium and a protest staged by Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA). Since launching hearings on July 14, the committee has heard from key figures including Attorney General Dawda Jallow, Janneh Commission chairman Sourahata Janneh, former commission secretaries Alhagie Mamadi Kurang and Ramatoulie Sarr, GLMA director Augustus Prom, and the audit firm appointed by the High Court as receiver of Jammeh’s companies.
Other witnesses include past and present Secretaries to the Cabinet, Ebrima Ceesay and Alieu Njie, Registrar of Companies Marie Therese Gomez, Registrar General Abdoulie Colley, and State House Vehicle Controller Nfamara Saidybah.
The inspection is scheduled to run through Thursday, September 4, with the aim of verifying the status, sale, and disposal of the former president’s assets.
