The Chief Justice of The Gambia has approved a coroner’s inquest into the death of Brigadier General Bora Colley, who died in state custody, according to a statement issued Tuesday by the judiciary.
The decision follows an application by the Attorney General and Minister of Justice on March 10, 2025, formally bringing the case to the Chief Justice’s attention. Citing Section 11(1)(a) of the Coroners Act (Cap 7:04, Laws of The Gambia), the Chief Justice determined that an inquest was “necessary or desirable” to investigate the circumstances surrounding Colley’s death.
The inquiry will be conducted by Principal Magistrate Dawda Phatty of Bundung Magistrates’ Court, who has been tasked with establishing the possible causes of death. Upon completion, Magistrate Phatty will submit his findings to the Chief Justice within a reasonable timeframe.
Colley, a former high-ranking military officer, was reportedly in state custody at the time of his death. Authorities have not publicly disclosed details regarding the cause or circumstances of his passing.
The coroner’s inquest is expected to shed light on the matter.
