Ports have got off their season on an impressive run after warding off competition from Brikama United to grab the Super Cup.
Left-footed danger man Adama Cham delivered the gong to Alagie Sarr’s men a minute from break. The silky front man snatched the ball off a Brikama United’s defence to unleash a beauty that slalomed past a mass of defenders, beating the Brikama keeper on goal.
That goal a touch of class stood out to end of time. Abdoulie Bah came on the verge of doubling the Sateba Boys woes but chose to clatter directly at the opponents back-four with tapping a better option.
Brikama also FA Cup holders, could have leveled at the death but evidently ran out of luck dose when Bojang’s effort agonisingly rattled on the crossbar. The contest held, at the Independence Stadium marking start of the domestic male GFF Premier League, availed both sides chance to better prepare for their respective CAF Cup fixtures.
Ports brought an end to their six-year wait for the domestic title last season and, by default of being crowned champions, are qualified to play in the Orange-sponsored Caf Champions League preliminary round.
No Gambia team has gone beyond the preliminary rounds and the Ferry Boys will be looking to undo that hoodoo February next year.
And ahead of that tie, a draw of which is yet to be held, gaffer Alagie Sarr has set about equipping his charges by acquiring three players, two of them being Gambia internationals including former Gamtel captain and defensive midfielder Matarr Nyan.
Brikama United, the country’s other representatives to the Caf Cup, will feature in the preliminaries of the Confederation Cup. Already the side is out running looking for funds to foot the bill of their campaign.
Super Cup Winners Ports scooped D75, 000 while Brikama contended with D50, 000 as runners-up.
