The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General Mamat O. Cham, paid a visit to the State Guard Battalion on Tuesday, emphasising the critical role the unit plays as the public face of the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF). During his address, he urged the guards to uphold the highest standards of service, commitment, focus, and loyalty.

“There cannot be any failure here. You are not here to learn; you are here to exhibit and carry out what you have learned. Therefore, you must remain focused and vigilant,” Lt. Gen. Cham declared.

He underscored that the battalion’s deployment at the State House transcends a typical military assignment, highlighting its diplomatic significance. “The impression visitors form based on how soldiers conduct themselves will shape their assessment and judgment of the overall posture and performance of the GAF,” he said.

The CDS made clear that weak performance would not be tolerated. “Anyone who is not able to stand shoulder-high and carry out his duty with diligence and impeccable character doesn’t belong here,” he warned.

He called for continuous training, capacity building, and regular assessments to maintain the battalion’s operational readiness. “You are always in the public eye, both nationally and internationally. The character and conduct of the State Guards are under constant surveillance,” he added, urging soldiers never to settle for anything less than excellence.

Colonel Abdoulie Bah, commander of the State Guard Battalion, responded by outlining some of the challenges facing his unit. He pointed to a shortage of patrol vehicles and limited communication equipment, calling for an urgent supply of handheld radios. “Addressing these gaps will significantly boost our command-and-control capabilities and enhance our operational efficiency,” Col. Bah said.

He also highlighted efforts to strengthen internal vigilance and security awareness within the battalion. “We have maintained a high state of preparedness as the State Guard Battalion, ensuring every soldier understands the importance of their role and the consequences of any breach in conduct,” Col. Bah stated.

Lt. Gen. Cham’s visit and stern message come at a time when the GAF seeks to reinforce discipline and professionalism within its ranks, particularly among those serving in high-profile security roles.
