BREAD PRICE TO INCREASE TO D12 PER LOAF

The nation is informed that the price of bread will increase from D10 to D12 from 1 July 2025. According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Employment and Regional Integration, negotiations with stakeholders has led to the setting of the price based on two considerations.

They claim that the quantity and quality of bread will increase. The weight of a loaf of ‘senfour’ bread will increase from 133 grammes to 160g, while that of ‘tapalapa’ bread will increase from 165 grammes to 190 grammes.

Secondly, they attribute the increase in cost to the cost of production input. The press release did not indicate what the inputs are. Foroyaa will find out what these inputs are and what is responsible for their increase.

The state should take one thing into consideration, that is, the more one increases the price of bread the more difficult it would be for parents to provide breakfast and lunch for children. Hence most parents are likely to prefer bread of lesser weight for D10 than bread of heavier weight for D12. The increase in weight therefore is not a demand of the population. The demand is to leave the price as it is. Unless the cost of the input has made it impossible for profit to made, it will be very difficult to convince the population of the increase in price. Foroyaa will nonetheless conduct a vox pop so that the Ministry can hear from the horse’s mouth. It is also important to add that universal school feeding programme would save the poor from hunger due to rising cost of living.
