The Coroner’s Inquest directed by the Chief Justice into the death of Bora Colley failed to proceed on Wednesday, 19 March 2025. There is no reason given for the case not proceeding. Foroyaa is monitoring the case and will keep the public informed about any latest developments.
Brigadier General Bora Colley, a former high-ranking officer in the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) and alleged member of the ‘Junglers’—a notorious hit squad under ex-President Yahya Jammeh—died in state custody on March 9, 2025. Colley had voluntarily returned to The Gambia on August 9, 2024, after eight years in self-imposed exile, citing deteriorating health. Upon his return, he was detained due to his involvement in human rights violations during Jammeh’s regime, as documented by the Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC). Despite continuous medical monitoring, Colley succumbed to his health issues.
In response to his death, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice applied to the Chief Justice for a coroner’s inquest to determine the cause of death, as mandated by The Gambia’s Coroner’s Act. Principal Magistrate Dawda Phatty was appointed to conduct the inquiry and report findings within a reasonable timeframe. However, as of March 19, 2025, the scheduled inquest failed to proceed, with no reasons provided for the delay.
