Bonu calls for patience

Must Read

By Sulayman Bah After wriggling out of the friendly against Mauritania, Gambian coachBonu left and Corentin of Mauritania right Peter Bonu Johnson has called for patience. The Gambian team’s performance left much to be desired after having been out-played by the visitors. The Scorpions managed to steal the headlines eventually courtesy of Ebou Kanteh’s header. The unmarked Brikama United dashed in after a Mauritanian defense gaffe to nod into an empty net. Scored in the 22nd minute, the goal saved Bonu, who craved for patience in the wake of a lackluster showing. “The team is just eight days old. The opponents have been together for long and their possession of the ball in the game showed it. We made sure that we stuck to the game plan. We have to be patient. This is a team we are building,” an optimistic Bonu Johnson told a crowd of reporters in a post-match comment. Last weekend’s encounter was the Gambia’s first international match since the 2014 World Cup qualifiers. Speaking earlier Johnson’s opposing number French-born Corentin Martins, while ruing his side’s profligacy in front of goal, voiced satisfaction over his team’s splendid reaction after conceding. “The team reacted well after conceding. The team played well. We had a lot of chances which we could have capitalized on and they (Gambia) have just one which they scored and won. So it’s football,” he said. Coach Martins concluded “I am fighting to bring Mauritania to the top.”]]>
