The National Assembly Member for Banjul North Constituency, Honourable Modou Lamin Bah, last Friday September 20, 2024, donated sixty thousand Dalasi to nine football teams within Banjul North and the Banjul sport committee. This is the 3rd edition of the annual support of the Member for Banjul North to the youth and sport associations within Banjul North Constituency and beyond. This years’ support covers different categories including the Banjul Sport Committee.

Nine qualified football teams for Banjul’s 2024 Nawettaan from Banjul North Constituency, received five thousand Dalasi each including teams within the junior category, while the Banjul Sport Committee received ten thousand Dalasi. The Theme for this year’s gesture of the Member was: “We do not follow the records; the records follow us.”

Modou Lamin Bah, the National Assembly Member for Banjul North Constituency said last year, the support was meant for football teams within Banjul North Constituency only, and said this year, the gesture of support has been extended to other sporting categories and the committee in charge of sport.

“This cash donation is meant to support all the teams in their endeavour to prepare well for the Nawettaan,” he said, and added that football is lucrative business. He said people need to invest in football and support young people who venture in the profession.

“This support is part of my political manifesto which I promised to the people of Banjul North to ensure football and other sporting activities continue to grow within the constituency and beyond,” he said.

Musa Njie, president of the Banjul Sport Committee said the Banjul North NAM has supported sporting activities within his constituency and beyond before he was elected as a representative of the people.

“We are not surprised that he has continued to support us. He does not only represent us in parliament but continues to support us in our day to day activities as well,” he said. Njie said Nawettaan does not only bring unity among young people, but cements collaboration among them. He urged other residents of Banjul North to emulate Hon. Bah and support young people in this endeavour.

The Councillor for Crab Island Ward Sheikh Ahmad Jaw said sport is lucrative business nowadays and asserts that for one to excel in it, one needs support.

“In Banjul, sports especially football is one of the things that brings young people together. During these sporting activities, we usually take our time as politicians to engage young people in order to know their problems, and to work closely with them and to give them solution to those problems,” he said.
